MINI is showcasing various visions for individual mobility in the world of tomorrow at the 2010 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The MINI Concept Vehicle, for example, whets the appetite of the connoisseur and enthusiast for the fun moments in life. Radically open, it offers yet a further outlook at a future model from MINI. Four seats each with their own door, overall length of more than four metres or 158", as well as four-wheel drive – these highlights characterise this new interpretation of that unique MINI feeling.

The MINI E, in turn, stands for ultra-clean and efficient driving qualities of the future in the spirit of sustained mobility. In a field test which started in the USA and now is also being conducted at various locations in Europe, the MINI E presents the potentials of all-electric motoring absolutely free of CO2 in everyday traffic.

Over and above these highlights for the future, the current MINI range enlarged once again in the 2010 model year is making a truly innovative, versatile and up-to-date appearance at the 2010 NAIAS. The MINI, MINI Clubman, and the new MINI Convertible stand out from all the others in Detroit from 16–24 January 2010 as a model family with individual highlights and different character from one model to the other, further enhanced by a wide range of engines and equipment options. One example is that the open-air model in the brand only introduced last year will also be available in the North American car markets as the MINI Cooper Convertible, the MINI Cooper S Convertible, and the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible.

Apart from highly expressive and powerful design, the agility typical of the brand, unique premium quality and a wide range of customisation options, exemplary fuel efficiency is the most important feature shared by all models in the MINI range. The MINI Concept Vehicle: a fascinating outlook at a new concept.

The development of the MINI model family also shows a clear-cut pattern of ongoing growth. MINI has already announced the introduction of a further model in fall 2010, a Crossover offering ideal qualities to enjoy the driving pleasure, style and character so typical of MINI also beyond the confines of urban mobility.

With its unusually variable interior, four doors and four seats, and with newly developed four-wheel drive, the fourth model in the range successfully reaches new target groups. And through its sophisticated drivetrain and suspension technology, the new model also offers all the agile handling and performance again so typical of a MINI.

The MINI Concept Vehicle presented at the 2010 NAIAS sets the foundation for the new model destined to enter the market in the not too distant future. Focusing consistently on the joy of motoring, the concept model clearly demonstrates the outstanding potential of the new car, carrying forward classic features of the radically open Mini Moke from the 1960s to a modern concept most appropriate for today’s world. MINI E: MINI drivers in the USA pioneering the path to CO2-free mobility.

The MINI E also offers a new and future-oriented rendition of those character-istics so typical of MINI, its electric motor delivering maximum output of 150 kW/204 hp and fed by a lithium-ion battery enabling the MINI E to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h or 62 mph in just 8.5 seconds and offering a maximum cruising range of 250 kilometres/150 miles.

The brand’s first all-electric car built in a small series of 600 units is pioneering the development of alternative drive concepts within the BMW Group on its way to CO2-free mobility.

Drivers of the MINI E, gaining thorough experience with electro-mobility in everyday traffic in the US states of California, New York and New Jersey, are also contributing to this pioneering development. In the context of project i, the BMW Group is indeed developing innovative vehicle concepts for densely populated urban areas, also using their knowledge on all-electric drive systems and their practical use gained, inter alia, through and with the MINI E.

Making a clear statement at the 2010 NAIAS, MINI is entering an important year full of highlights also in the US car market. The enlargement of the model range and the expansion of the dealer network set ideal perspectives for continuing MINI’s story of success in the USA. The models and concepts presented at the NAIAS by MINI offer an exciting outlook into the near and medium-term future of the brand.

The Detroit Auto Show, as it is commonly called, held for the first time in 1907 and therefore rich in tradition, is acknowledged as the most significant annual event of its kind on the American continent. Last year, for example, the organisers and more than 100 exhibitors from all over the world were able to welcome more than 650,000 visitors to Detroit.

PRIME MINISTER WELCOMES MINI...

The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, welcomed an all-electric, zero emissions MINI E to the Government car pool today in Downing Street. The MINI E will be tested by ministers wanting to try a fully-fledged electric car in an urban environment on their official business around London.

The MINI E was presented to the government car pool by Tim Abbott, Managing Director of BMW Group (UK) Ltd, following the handover of 40 identical cars to pioneering drivers on Sunday to members of the public who will run the cars as part of an important scientific field trial. The cars will be tested for one year in total and will both help to shape the future of BMW Group electric vehicle development and to inform the wider world about the economic, behavioural and practical issues of living with an electric vehicle.

The Prime Minister was joined by Cabinet colleagues, including the Business Secretary Lord Mandelson, who has been an enthusiastic supporter of electric vehicle development through the Government’s Technology Strategy Board.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown: “I congratulate BMW and MINI for their ground-breaking electric MINI project and I welcome the extensive user field trial that has now begun.”

The Prime Minister added: “The low carbon transport industry will not only cut harmful emissions but has the potential to be a major source of jobs and growth. We have already committed £400 million of support to the sector, encouraging its development and take-up, and I am confident that in future years we will see thousands more electric and other low carbon cars on Britain’s roads."

Lord Mandelson said: “I am delighted that the MINI E is going to be put through its paces by Government ministers for two months. The Government is keen to show that driving electric vehicles is fun. I want the UK to be a world leader in low carbon transport and cars like the UK-built MINI can help us achieve that aim.”

The Prime Minister and Lord Mandelson were also able to meet one of the first MINI E test drivers, Oxford resident David Beesley, who collected his car from the MINI plant at Oxford on Sunday. “I have only had my MINI E for two days but it’s really fun to drive and it feels great to be reducing my carbon footprint,” he enthused.

Like the MINI E research projects in North America and Germany, the UK trial is a collaborative effort between the partners in a BMW Group UK-led consortium.

Scottish and Southern Electric will be responsible for the electricity infrastructure in the research area and is committed to supplying ‘green energy’ from sustainably generated sources to all drivers of the MINI E through an offsetting scheme.

Oxford Brookes University’s Sustainable Vehicle Engineering Centre will manage the collation of qualitative and quantitative research throughout the UK project. This will include analysis of driver experiences with the MINI E, as well as reviewing the technical information provided by the data-logging units fitted to every MINI E.

The consortium is strengthened by public sector organisations from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council. These organisations are working to develop high economic growth projects such as this.

Additional funding is provided by the Technology Strategy Board as part of a UK-wide programme involving trials of 340 ultra-low carbon vehicles from several manufacturers. This funding enables the monthly lease for MINI pioneers to be reduced from £550 to £330.

Unique, typical of MINI, and with a great role model from way back when.
The MINI Beachcomber Concept is the vision of a car leaving behind all conventional standards and creating innovative momentum for individual mobility of the future. The combination of traction optimised by all-wheel drive for excursions beyond the beaten track, on the one hand, and an extreme focus on motoring in the open air, on the other, is quite unprecedented in the world of the automobile.

Now, therefore, the MINI Beachcomber Concept makes such a driving experience a truly attractive option, offering a harmonious blend of features only a MINI can provide in such authentic style. And since individual character, a clear focus on maximum driving pleasure, and the courage to create new concepts have always set the foundation for new models in the MINI range, this open-air all-wheel-drive concept clearly stands out from the beginning as a typical MINI.

The authentic style and character of the MINI Beachcomber Concept also results from the fact that the brand once already offered an extreme thrill of driving pleasure in the open air by conscious reduction to the very minimum: Way back in 1964, just five years after the market launch of the classic Mini, the creator of the first model, the world-famous engineer Alec Issigonis, already developed an all-open version of this revolutionary compact car.

The body of the Mini Moke, as it was called, was made up of hardly more than a floorpan, wide sills at the side, the engine compartment lid and the windscreen. A folding roof served – more or less – to protect the driver and passengers from precipitation.

With its robust structure and the drivetrain technology carried over from the Mini, this four-seater fun car became a great success particularly in the sunny regions of the USA and Australia. Production of the Mini Moke in Great Britain continued until 1968 with a production volume of some 14,500 units, following which production was continued in Australia and Portugal.

The MINI Beachcomber Concept now projects the principle of the Mini Moke into the 21st century. The rustic appearance of the car and its consistent concept of consciously reducing the body components and interior to a minimum clearly follow the tradition of the radically open Mini Moke back in the 1960s. This is indeed further accentuated by design language strongly inspired by the Mini Moke and enhanced by various striking details such as the characteristic radiator grille.

It goes without saying that the new model meets all modern demands in terms of space and comfort, efficiency and safety, while nevertheless retaining its clear focus on driving pleasure in direct contact with the surroundings.

Even ALL4 all-wheel drive goes back to a role model from the past, to be precise a prototype Mini Moke fitted by Alec Issigonis with two engines in 1963. On this test car appropriately referred to as the “Twini”, the front and rear wheels were driven in each case by a four-cylinder from the Mini range of engines.

Versatile, modern, and safe at all times.
Modern and up-to-date from A–Z, the MINI Beachcomber Concept offers a wide range of innovations for consistent driving pleasure in the 21st century. The outstanding know-how in automotive development of a premium car maker in the areas of design, drivetrain, safety and production technology brings together the undiluted character of the concept car with a wide range of solutions most convincing in practice.

Measuring approximately four metres in length and with its highly versatile interior, the MINI Beachcomber Concept offers all the variability and spaciousness required for active leisure time. Consistently reduced to a minimum, the body of the car ensures an intense feeling of the sun shining in and the wind rushing by, while full maintenance of all MINI safety standards guarantees maximum occupant safety at all times.

The MINI Beachcomber Concept comes with a strong and stable body structure incorporating clearly defined load paths and deformation units serving to convey and consistently absorb impact energy in the event of a collision. Rollover safety also meets the highest demands made of an open car, the stable frame on the passenger cell able to withstand even extreme situations formed by substantially reinforced A-pillars and an equally strong D-pillar bar complete with an integrated lateral support element at the rear of the car. This additional safety component is indeed finished in body colour and, through its geometry alone, conveys a supreme standard of strength and stability. It is made of high-strength steel for maximum stiffness on optimum weight, again in the interest of supreme safety.

This concept of intelligent lightweight technology serves to consistently lower the car’s centre of gravity in the interest of superior agility at all times. Indeed, this agility is further enhanced by another special feature also standing out through its special look, with the lateral support element boasting recesses shaped to form the “MINI” model designation. Again, this special feature clearly visible from outside particularly when looking at the car from above further emphasises the spirit of pure adventure in the open air.

Extreme variability for all kinds of activities, weather and road conditions.
Single seats at the rear adjusting fore-and-aft as required and with backrests folding down completely offer the passengers a supreme standard of grand touring comfort tailored to their individual requirements and allow appropriate adjustment of transport capacities for all needs. In practice, this means that the driver and passengers are able to conveniently stow even bulky sports equipment such as mountain bikes or wakeboards securely held in position by special fastening systems.

When open, the MINI Beachcomber Concept is also able to carry extra-long objects such as surfboards without the slightest problem. Fastened firmly to the lateral support, surfboards fit conveniently into the car, sticking out at the top on the way to the beach.

The driver and passengers enjoy convenient access to the luggage compartment though the rear panel split vertically down the middle into two sections. Whenever necessary, the right-hand side may remain fully open for bulky objects extending out of the car at the rear. The left rear element, in turn, is a window-less door hinged at the side and extending up to the seat backrests. The additional storage case fitted on to the door is reminiscent in its round shape of a fully enclosed spare wheel holder of the type otherwise seen on a conventional offroader. But since the MINI Beachcomber Concept comes with runflat tyres and therefore does not require a spare wheel, the lockable case may be used to take along additional luggage, keeping beach mats, towels, surf shoes or similar odds and ends within easy reach at all times.

Flexible protection from wind and weather: soft roof or hardtop inserts.
The MINI Beachcomber Concept is built for the sunny side of life and is simply perfect for spontaneous action. Through its optimum flexibility, the car is able to meet all kinds of different requirements, naturally coping with any sudden change in exterior conditions.

This alone gives the MINI Beachcomber Concept all the qualities required for everyday motoring, with several options to cater for new demands and weather conditions.

The soft roof coming off the body completely and folding up into a compact unit offers particularly convenient and, at the same time, effective protection from rain and weather. Whenever required, the roof may be drawn over the car within a few instants like a tonneau cover on a boat, fastening conveniently on the windscreen frame, the rear panel and the side openings.

Made of an extremely light and, at the same time, very robust special fibre, the roof comes with transparent plastic inserts at the sides and at the rear serving as windows.

In its functional qualities, the roof follows the same standard as the most sophisticated and demanding outdoor wear combining maximum protection from wind and rain with minimum weight.

The lashing points holding the roof in position are equally strong, stable and user-friendly, with the four entry points and the rear door opening and closing easily when the roof is in place, naturally keeping out draughts and water from outside.

As a further option for reliable protection even in bad weather, the MINI Beachcomber Concept is available with accurately fitting plastic inserts on the roof, at the sides and at the rear. Made of an extra-light plastic material, these robust inserts carry over the principle of the removable hardtop to the doors and the luggage compartment lid of the car. And again in the interest of clear design and superior convenience, the inserts come flush with the body of the MINI Beachcomber Concept.

The door elements maintain their defined position through their firm connection to the opening points and the A- and D-pillars. They are likewise transparent at the top to provide good visibility to the outside, with the rear element held firmly in position through its contact to the left door element, the rear body panel at the right, and the loading sill.

The hardtop as such is connected to the windscreen frame at the front and rests in special mounts on the rollover crossbar. Precisely arranged connections joining the hardtop with the side and rear elements keep the entire structure extremely strong and stable, the appropriate connection being unfastened in each case when opening a door.

Following the MINI Crossover Concept opening up fascinating new options through the further extension of the brand family, the potential of the MINI’s modern drivetrain technology and its flexible space concept is now being used consistently to offer additional driving opportunities in a new dimension. Indeed, the MINI Beachcomber Concept offers a particularly emotional driving experience, demonstrating these qualities once again in that unique style so typical of the brand. Ten MINI cars. Ten artists. "Wash Me".

It’s always tempting to write “Wash Me” on a dirty car or to draw something on a fogged windscreen with your finger. Everyday situations like this were the inspiration for this publication, says Nico Ammann, art director and photographer of the works featured in the book to be published by MINI Switzerland in a limited edition of 2,000.

The upshot is a colourful volume depicting a wide range of subjects, and one that will appeal not only to MINI fans. The common thread is that none of the ten artists has ever before worked with the automobile as a medium, and each has transformed it into a transient work of art.

The following artists and authors contributed to the book project: Smash137, Fabian Bertschinger, Marisa Pichler and Gigi Burn, Tika, Euro, Aurèle Sack, Stefan Ege and Seak, August, Rémi Jaccard and, last but not least Dieter Meier, also famous as the singer in the band Yello.

Designer Alfredo Häberli provided two sketches and an article. The author and journalist Michèle Roten and Prof. Dr. Jacqueline Otten, director of the design department at Zurich University of the Arts, likewise made creative written contributions to the book, which will be out in early November.

Art always was, and remains, a key aspect of the MINI brand. MINI is, for example, the exclusive partner of the “Ludlow 38” exhibition space at the Goethe-Institut in New York, located in the heart of the thriving gallery district in the Lower East Side, near Chinatown and not far from the New Museum of Contemporary Art. Since its inauguration in 2008, this gallery space has presented contemporary artistic projects in collaboration with various cultural partners in Germany. Through its partnership with brands such as Bisazza and its involvement with FIAC 2007 or the International Talent Support / MINI International Photo Award in Trieste, MINI also remains true to its traditional involvement with unconventional cultural projects. MINI is celebrating a great birthday – and the party goes on. The 50th anniversary of the brand clearly leaves a powerful stamp on MINI’s appearance at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

At the MINI stand in the new Hall 11, the anniversary of the brand is the focal point in terms of both architecture and the presentation itself, MINI bridging the gap from the past into the present and from here on to the future of the brand. Visitors to the world’s No 1 car show this year will experience a journey through time beginning with the first appearance of the classic Mini back in 1959 and still far from coming to an end with the outstanding success of the current MINI model range. Because fascinating perspectives for the ongoing development of the brand still remain in the years and even decades to come.

Celebrating the world debut of the MINI Coupé Concept and the MINI Roadster Concept, MINI is presenting no less than two spectacular visions of driving pleasure in the sixth decade of the brand at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Both concepts offer a unique interpretation of the traditional values, the individual style and the innovative character of MINI, each in its own way. Both concept cars stand for concentrated driving pleasure in an extremely sporting Coupé, on the one hand, and in a Roadster both pure and elegant for extravagant open-air motoring, on the other.

Further highlights at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show being presented to the public at a car show for the first time are the anniversary MINI 50 Mayfair and MINI 50 Camden announced on the occasion of the MINI United Festival. These two likewise unique models also offer a perfect symbiosis of tradition and innovation in particularly attractive style.

The MINI 50 Mayfair and MINI 50 Camden will be built for a limited period of just one year, their exclusive status being clearly confirmed by special equipment and design features.

The broad range of new models is being rounded off by the world debut of the MINI One D, a new entry-level diesel consistently upgrading the MINI portfolio of particularly economical and efficient models.

What do the MINI and street art have in common? MINI has always been a defining feature of the streetscapes of major cities and itself constitutes a part of urban street culture. Exceptional design has traditionally been an aspiration of the brand – a passion shared by the champions of creative street art.

Last week in Hamburg, the legendary New York street artist Craig “KR” Costello customised a MINI in his own unique style. His trademark is the so-called KRINK dripping ink look, in which paint runs down an object as if it had been too thickly applied. The entire MINI was given the typical KRINK drip treatment by the creative artist from Brooklyn, with silver paint running down the distinctive contours of the black MINI – along its body as well as the side and rear windows. The project was accompanied by the “Erste Liebe Film” and captured by photographer Ali Salehi.

About KRINK.
Craig “KR” Costello rose to fame in the 90s art scene with his signature dripping silver paint, which gave rise to the KRINK brand. Today his tags can be found in metropolises around the world – in building entrances, on walls, in underground stations, on street signs etc. As a youngster growing up in New York’s Queens district, KR already began developing graffiti paints. What started out as a personal experimentation with homemade materials swiftly evolved into a product range – initially strictly limited – of special silver paint in bottles, which he handed out to chosen friends. Out of this would grow a flourishing business which, under the name KRINK (from KR-INK), offers a wide range of special markers and inks which are a byword for top quality and enjoy true cult status.

All-electric MINI E to be unveiled at Los Angeles Auto Show

BMW Group will present the new, electrically-powered MINI E to the global media for the first time at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 19/20 November 2008. 500 MINI E vehicles will then be shipped to the US states of California, New York and New Jersey for testing with private and corporate customers.

The development of the MINI E underlines BMW Group’s commitment to reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in road traffic, without compromise to the driving experience. The 500 cars bound for North America will offer BMW Group the opportunity to evaluate ownership potential for vehicles supplied with an electric power supply. BMW Group aims to begin series production in the medium term of all-electric vehicles as part of the company’s Number ONE strategy.

The cars will be delivered to customers on a one-year lease with an extension option. Monthly lease installments will cover any required technical service including all necessary maintenance and the replacement of wearing parts. At the end of the lease, all of the automobiles belonging to the project will be returned to the BMW Group’s engineering fleet where they will be subjected to comparative tests.

MINI E specification and performance
The MINI E’s electric drive train produces a peak torque of 220 Nm, and power is delivered to the front wheels via a single-stage helical gearbox. This unique engine and transmission arrangement powers the MINI E seamlessly to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 95 mph.

Based on the current MINI Hatch, the car will initially be available as a two-seater. The space normally inhabited by rear passengers is reserved for a lithium-ion battery.

When in use in the zero-emissions MINI, the battery unit combines high output with ample storage capacity and remarkable power output. The lithium-ion storage unit will have a maximum capacity of 35 kilowatt hours (kWh) and transmit energy to the electric motor as direct current at a nominal 380 volts. The rechargeable battery is made up of 5,088 cells grouped into 48 modules. These modules are packaged into three battery elements that are compactly arranged inside the MINI E.

The energy storage unit’s basic components are based on technologies proven in power supply units for mobile phones and portable computers. The MINI E’s lithium-ion battery can be plugged into all standard power outlets. Its charge time is strongly dependent on the voltage and amperage of the electricity flowing through the grid. In the USA, users can recharge a battery that has been completely drained within a very short period of time using a wallbox that will be supplied as standard with every MINI E.

The wallbox will be installed in the customer’s garage, enable higher amperage, and thus provide for extremely short charging times. Wallboxes fully recharge batteries in just two-and-a-half hours. Only lockable garages or similar buildings will qualify as power stations for the MINI E.

Driven by electricity: zero emissions at minimal cost
A full recharge draws a maximum of 28 kilowatt hours of electricity from the grid. Based on the car’s range, a kilowatt hour translates into 5.4 miles. Besides the benefit of zero-emissions driving, the MINI E thus offers significant economic advantages over a vehicle powered by a conventional internal combustion engine.

The heavy-duty battery delivers its power to an electric motor, which is mounted transversely under the MINI E’s bonnet. This power unit is able to unleash its full thrust from a dead standstill and is complemented by its dynamic deceleration potential, which is directly coupled to the accelerator pedal.

As soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the electric motor acts as a generator. This results in braking force, and the power recovered from the kinetic energy is fed back to the battery. This interaction ensures a comfortable and smooth driving experience. In city traffic, some 75 per cent of all deceleration can be done without the brakes. Making substantial use of this energy regeneration feature extends the car’s range by up to 20 percent.

The MINI E’s brake system comes with a newly developed electric pump. Its Electrical Power Assisted Steering (EPS) is the same as the one used in mass-produced MINIs.

The MINI E’s 1,465 kilograms is evenly distributed across the car. Handling safety is ensured by modifications to the suspension system and the car’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which is adapted due this model’s specific wheel loads.

Unique styling to mark out the new MINI E
Every MINI E produced for this pilot project will have the same paintwork and bear a serial number on their front bumpers.

The MINI E’s coachwork features an exclusive combination of metallic Dark Silver on all panels but the roof, which is clad in Pure Silver. What distinguishes the zero-emissions MINI E is a unique logo in Interchange Yellow, depicting a stylized power plug in the shape of an “E” set against a silver background. It has been applied to the roof, in smaller dimensions to the front and back, to the charger port lid, the dashboard trim, and – combined with the MINI logo – to the door jamb, in slightly modified form. The color of the roof edges, mirror housings, interior style cues and seat seams will also match the logo’s yellow hue.

Inside, the central gauge and battery level indicator behind the wheel of the MINI E - which replaces the MINI’s rev counter - feature yellow lettering against a dark grey background. The battery level is displayed in percentage figures. The central gauge includes an LED display indicating power consumption in red and power recuperation in green.

Maintenance by qualified specialists
The electric drive’s high-voltage technology requires that maintenance work be done by qualified personnel using special tools that are not included in MINI service partners’ standard toolboxes. In light of this, a service base will be set up for customers in California, New York and New Jersey, staffed by MINI service engineers that are specially trained to perform maintenance and repair work on the MINI E’s electrical components. In the event of drive malfunction, these experts will provide professional support at the customer’s local MINI dealer or the service base’s specially equipped workshop. Technical inspections will take place after 3,000 miles (just under 5,000 kilometers) and at least after six months.

Production in Oxford and Munich
The MINI E has already gone through the major phases of product development for mass-produced vehicles and passed numerous crash tests on the way. The MINI E’s energy storage unit emerged completely unscathed from all of the crash tests mandated by US standards, which are especially high.

Production of the 500 cars will take place at the company’s Oxford and Munich sites and is scheduled for completion before the end of 2008. MINI’s Plant Oxford will be responsible for manufacturing the entire vehicle on the standard production line, with the exception of the drive components and the lithium-ion battery. The units will then be transferred to a specially equipped manufacturing facility situated on BMW plant premises where the electric motor, battery units, performance electronics and transmission will be integrated.

You know what they say about length…

The MINI Crossover Concept is the first MINI model to measure over four metres in length and almost 1.6 m high, giving it greater practicality and enhanced flexibility. Interior personalisation opportunities are also increased.

Looks matter…

The MINI Crossover Concept still features many of the typical MINI characteristics, such as the wheels located at four corners to highlight the ‘go kart’ feeling, the circular design features and the entertaining use of space and functions. More than just an all-wheel drive, however, the MINI Crossover offers fantastic flexibility and meets more specific customer requirements.

With four doors, two on each side, you may think the MINI Crossover Concept has a conventional feel after all. But you’d be wrong. Two conventional doors can be found on the passenger’s side (front and back), with a third for the driver. The fourth door, for the rear passenger on the driver’s side, slides back along the outside of the car for convenient access and loading.

The rear door has a frameless, retractable window and when open, swivels to one side to facilitate the loading of long items, such as skis, snowboards and surfboards. But it doesn’t stop there: the capacity can be increased even further due to the folding roof cover which extends across the whole length of the roof and there’s even a transport case which can be fitted on to the outside of the rear door.

But it’s what’s inside that counts…

With more storage space than ever seen before in a MINI, the MINI Crossover Concept offers additional capacity and uniquely, the opportunity to personalise the layout of the interior. The four seats are individual, single seats which can be adjusted forwards and backwards by up to thirteen centimetres in the rear – allowing more legroom to the rear passengers.

The front and rear seats are linked visually by the new MINI Centre Rail – a matt-polished aluminium fastening rail which extends from the dashboard through the middle of the car, to the rear. A unique fastening system can be used with the Centre Rail to attach cupholders, storage units and entertainment consoles which can be passed between the front and the rear passengers.

A special collection of dishes and cups have been created by Porzellan Manufaktur, Nymphenburg, specifically for the Crossover Concept’s Centre Rail.

The MINI Crossover Concept features a new display and control console which hosts all major entertainment, telecommunication and navigation functions: the MINI Centre Globe. This three dimensional globe can be personalised independently by both the driver and passenger as the display is shown in two hemispheres – for example, allowing the passenger to surf the net whilst the driver follows the navigation.

Operated by a touch-sensitive surface, the MINI Centre Globe can also be programmed by a trackball situated on the steering wheel, buttons or slide controls in the lower section of the globe, or even by a keyboard which extends out from the dashboard on the passenger’s side.

The MINI Centre Globe also hosts the stop/start function, whereby the driver inserts a Keyball into the upper edge to start and switch off the engine.

The MINI Crossover Concept previews at the Paris Motor Show and is the basis on which a series production will be developed in the future.

Worldwide measures to combat HIV/AIDS are one of the main elements of the corporate and social policy pursued by the BMW Group. But the automobile manufacturer is also committed to fighting this pandemic in other affected countries, such as Thailand or China, for example. The company's membership of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBC) underlines its long-term commitment at its individual locations.

MINI engine wins Engine of the Year 1.4 to 1.8 litre category

Winner of the same International Engine of the Year Awards category in 2007, when it narrowly beat the 1.5-litre Toyota Prius, MINIs four-cylinder has dominated the class this year, collecting 136 more points than its closest rival, the 1.8-litre TFSI Audi engine that powers a plethora of VW Group products.

Riding high on the growing trend of combining power with downsized powertrains, the 1,598cc unit had plenty of judges waxing lyrical, including Nikos Kounitis from Greece’s 4Wheels magazine, who commented that he thought the motor represented “downsizing at its best”. Dan Vardie from Romania’s Autoshow added, “This is one of the first small engines able to deliver performance normally found in bigger engines. Two engine experts combine to create a robust, powerful and efficient petrol engine.”

Constructed from light alloy, the heart of the Mini Cooper S, features a twin-scroll turbocharger, gasoline direct injection, twin overhead camshafts, roller-type drag arms that have been optimised for minimum friction, and hydraulic valve play compensation elements. Furthermore, the outlet valves are filled with sodium to aid cooling, and the intake camshaft offers infinite phase adjustment, setting the engine’s valve timing to the driver’s requirements.

Title battle goes to the wire at Brands!

Race one got off to a flyer, a good start by Coulter from the front row but Depper holds onto top spot on their opening circuit. Jason Greatrex is also on a charge and up to third past Arthur Forster. However a coming together at Druids slows many of the drivers up and as lap one is completed it’s Depper who’s still leading but not for long as Coulter sweeps through on the inside to take over at the front and begins to pull away.

Gary Meikle was an early entry into pits after being involved in the accident at Druids, Pedro del Campo was also in the wars, circulating Brands with his bonnet up while Steve Wood and Arthur Forster also found their way into the pits. Jack Stanford put his name on the retirement list.

In Club a super start by Nick Jones, he’s the early leader with Gary Kounnis second and Jenny Ryan third.

Race leader Coulter then posted the fastest lap of the race so far on lap three and by the time they start lap five he has a second and a half lead over Depper with Greatrex close behind in third. Then it’s Pattison, Wilson, Bristow, Mortimer, Blyth and Lines. Still in Club it’s Jones from Kounnis and Ryan who have formed their own breakaway group.

By lap nine, still no change in the order, everybody settling down after the hectic opening laps, Coulter almost two seconds to the good over Depper. Greatrex is still third but losing time to Depper with Pattison and Wilson scrapping over fourth. On lap ten it’s Wilson who grabs fourth with Bristow sixth and the title-chasing Mortimer in seventh.

Still no change in the order in Club but Nick Jones is pulling further away from Kounnis and Ryan who squabble over second. Behind her it’s Graham Parsons, Andrew Cox and Dawn Boyd.

Having taken his first ever MINI Challenge win at Pembrey, Nathan Coulter was looking good to make it two victories but the action is with Greatrex who is having to defend his third place from a charging Darelle Wilson. It’s not all about those two as Pattison, Bristow, Mortimer, and Lines are all involved as well and any one of these six is in with a very good chance of a podium place.

Lap sixteen and Coulter is being caught, Depper reducing the lead to one point three seconds, the front two with a comfortable margin over Greatrex in third and by lap seventeen Depper takes another second out of Coulter; the gap is down to eight tenths of a second with less than five minutes on the clock.

In Club the top three are bunching together and there’s now nothing between Jones, Kounnis and Ryan with Graham Parsons a further three seconds back in fourth.

Lap nineteen and it’s now an advantage of just two tenths of a second for Coulter as he looks to maintain his position at the head of the field and as they complete the lap, he and Depper are right together, Coulter has the inside line through Paddock and up to Druids but instead of trying to take the long way around and grabbing the inside at Graham Hill, he thinks better of it and settles back into second.

Still nothing between the leading trio of Club cars as Jenny Ryan goes in pursuit of the overall title meanwhile her title rival Oly Mortimer is sixth overall with two laps to go.

Onto the last lap and Depper’s drinking in the last chance saloon as he tries to find that little bit extra that will take him past Coulter. However he can’t find it and it’s Coulter who grabs his second win of the year, crossing the line three tenths of a second ahead of Depper while Greatrex keeps Wilson in his pocket to claim third with title contender Oly Mortimer having to settle for sixth.

In Club it’s Nick Jones who wins but only just with Gary Kounnis right with him as they cross the line and it’s a good haul of points for Jenny Ryan who takes third.

So no titles decided and all still to play for as they begin race two, the final encounter of the 2007 season. Once again another good start by Coulter who leads this time but only just from Darelle Wilson, who is doggedly trying to pass him on the opening lap. Oly Mortimer is in determined mood and bumps into the back of a competitor as they round Graham Hill for the first time, forcing another Cooper S to take to the grass in an avoiding action. In Club class Jenny Ryan is the early leader but not for long as Nick Jones passes her on lap two.

The action is fast, furious and a little bit more and as they start lap four. It’s still Coulter who leads from Wilson, the gap between them almost half a second with Depper third, Bristow fourth and Pattison close behind in fifth. Meanwhile Mortimer is struggling to get close to sixth placed Stewart Lines.

In Club on lap six it’s still Jones who leads by half a second from Ryan who has her hands full in keeping Kounnis and Parsons at bay, the pair all over her like a rash.

As they begin lap nine there are still no retirements but Wilson is closing in on Coulter, the gap reducing by a tenth of a second and then he made his move, sweeping past majestically at Druids to go first and then, after avoiding a spinning Laura Waddington along the Cooper Straight, Coulter then loses second to Depper.

Another unable to hold onto their position is Jenny Ryan, Gary Kounnis going through up into second place.

As they start lap eleven it’s Wilson who leads from Depper then Coulter, Bristow, all four covered by just a couple of seconds, while Mortimer is still in seventh which may not be enough to win him the title. Jenny Ryan, his title rival, is still mixing it in a four way Club class fight on lap twelve, still no change in the order with Parsons fourth, but all four covered by a single second. At times it’s peer through the fingers stuff.

Depper, who’d posted the fastest lap so far on lap six, is starting to close in on Wilson and has him in his sights by lap fourteen yet he himself is coming under increasing pressure from Coulter. Their efforts could well be hindered as they started to mix it with the leading Club class cars. The man on the move and needing to do so is Oly Mortimer, he gets past Stewart Lines to grab sixth and is still hopeful of moving higher up the order. His quest for the Challenge title is eased slightly as Ryan drops to fourth having been overtaken by Parsons and there’s still half the race still to go.

The top three Cooper S cars are breaking away, covered by half a second with fourth placed Bristow unable to stay with them, he’s more than three seconds back and more than concerned with preserving his position from Pattison, Mortimer and Lines who are very, very close. In fact Mortimer and Lines have swapped positions a couple of times on lap eighteen.

In Club Kounnis is up into the lead, a seven-tenths cushion as they began lap nineteen with Parsons third and title-chasing Ryan unable to stay the pace, trailing down in fourth place and looking to find more than a second if she’s to plug the gap to the final podium position.

Steve Tyldsley became the first of the retirements and looked to have been joined by Laura Waddington, who came in to pit but after a quick check of the wheels she was back out again. Meanwhile the luckless Steve Wood made it a double DNF on the day by tumbling off at Clearways.

Into Druids on lap twenty-four and Depper passes Wilson to go first but Wilson fights back and regains the lead as they go through Paddock Hill on the very next lap. Depper then immediately retakes the lead at Druids, fantastic! In Club Ryan is back on a charge and closing in on third place Parsons while Kounnis is still in charge out front.

Lap twenty-six and Jones, who has been challenging Kounnis, finally makes his way through as they round Clearways. Graham Parsons tries to go through the same gap but Kounnis manages to fend him off, with Ryan in fourth also closing in.

A good lap twenty-nine for Depper, as he opens up a second and a half gap over Wilson and Coulter who were baulked by slower traffic. Ryan goes third in Club after Parsons left proceedings following a squabble with Gary Kounnis.

A quick stop for Jack Stanford but he rejoins, well down the order.

With time running out in the chase for the title, Mortimer is seventh in Cooper S and Ryan is third in Club and if it remains like that then the title will be remaining in Ireland.

As the chequered flag is waved, it’s Depper who is first; Wilson is second with Coulter third. Meanwhile Mortimer is seventh but it’s not good enough as Jones wins Club with Kounnis second and Jenny Ryan securing third, which means she finishes the season as 2007 Mini Challenge champion.
